Results from the Windhoek Lager International Pairs S5 Finals

The Season 5 Windhoek Lager International Pairs SA Final was played at Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate on 3-4 June 2021. This was the longest WLIPSA season in the history of the event, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, delaying the regionals and SA finals.

The tournament was played over 2 days on a pristine Devonvale Golf Course and saw the lowest average handicap field at a SA Finals with an average of 6.6! We had some exceptional under par scores from the plus handicappers in the field and it was great to see that low, mid, and high handicappers can compete at the same level of competitiveness. This all contributed for a nail biting and entertaining two rounds.

The headline sponsor Windhoek Lager ensured that through their sponsorship, the 2020 season could be completed and no golfer who qualified was left behind, thus keeping it real. Additional support from The Pro Shop, Legacy Hotels and Resorts, Kulula, Callaway and Riviera On Vaal Resort made this final a great event.

Players arrived on the Wednesday and received their welcome hamper, which was made extra special by Namaqua Garage (Jaco Louw), the franchise dealer for Mercedes-Benz, adding a few extra items to the welcome hampers and also sponsored some energy bars and drinks to push the golfers on their last day.

Devonvale Golf Course Staff made sure the course was in tip-top shape for our SA Finalists with fast and challenging greens on their first round. David van der Sandt and his TV crew from TV Sport & News Productions cc followed players around the course and captured some magnificent golf shots over the two days.

Day one came to a close and resulted with the leading Pair of Alex Moonsamy + Yogan Chetty from Maidstone Golf Club on 41 points closely followed by Goolam Vahed + NSM Maharaj from Mount Edgecombe CC and pairs from Paarl, Kuilsrivier and Kimberley. The ladies also played some fantastic golf and there were 2 pairings that stood out for a possible win, Sonja Koehler + Suzanne Mente - Somerset West GC leading with 36 points followed by Sue Smith + Tanya Adams - Mount Edgecombe CC on 35 points.

Golfers were entertained the evening after round 1 by one of the ‘BROERS’ brothers Nic Stevens and made for a fun and a relaxing evening before heading into the final round.

The final day started off as a seeded draw with leading pairs playing together and made for a great battle for the championship titles. All eyes were on the leading pairs and players had a taste of the professional tournament environment with the TV crew following them around the course. As scores came in on the final day it became apparent that pressure was mounting, and teams started jockeying for the top spot. The pair from Maidstone golf club had a challenging last round and only came up with 33 points, which would not be sufficient to take the win. The Mount Edgecombe pair kept things together and came in with 39 points and a chance of making it to the World finals. The pairs from Kranspoort, Paarl and Kuilsrivier fought hard, but it was the Pairing from Kuilsrivier GC that took the top spot with a brilliant 43 points on the final day to secure the win with 2 points. This led to a 3-way playoff for 2nd spot and a chance of making it to the World Finals. At the end it was Hennie and Dick from Paarl GC who birdied the first playoff hole and secure their place at the World Finals in Portugal.

The ladies seemed excited but nervous on the final day as 6 pairs fought hard on the day, but it was the team from Somerset West, Suzanne, and Sonja, who kept their composure on the last day to secure a 2-shot victory over the Mount Edgecombe ladies’ team and a place in the World Finals, as our South African Ladies pairing.

Men’s/Mixed Pairs Champions - Davel Le Roux + Rhys Human - Kuilsrivier Golf Club

Ladies Champions - Sonja Koehler + Suzanne Christian - Somerset West Golf Club

Men’s/Mixed Pairs 2nd (in a playoff) - Dick Coetzee + Hennie Hamer - Boschenmeer Golf Estate / Paarl Golf Club

Belgium & Netherlands Hop On Board International Pairs

H²BC and its director, Joris Moons has recently joined the International Pairs as the licensee for Belgium & Netherlands.

H²BC and its director, Joris Moons, are active in coaching and mentoring (in customer centricity and organisation, more specifically personal efficiency and effectiveness).

Within the mentoring activity, golf came to the surface almost automatically, for it is both a challenge (to learn to focus on the essence of the process) and a way to reset and go back to basics. “But, honestly, we’re just slightly addicted to golf “ says Joris Moons.

H²BC is located in Antwerp, Belgium – in the centre of the Benelux (which is the area they are covering for International Pairs).

Joris Moons - Belgium & Netherlands Licensee

Golf in Belgium:
In Belgium, there are around and about 80.000 golfers and some 90 golf courses. Even though these numbers do not compare to some other areas, there are now 3 Belgian players on the European Tour and/or PGA, of whom 2 were part of the Ryder Cup team for Europe (remember Colsaerts’ miracle at Medinah 2012 and best rookie Pieters in 2016). As a team, Belgium even won the latest World Cup of Golf (Pieters and Detry, Melbourne 2018), so you could say they have a solid tradition of playing in pairs.

Golf in the Netherlands:
In the Netherlands, there are a bit more than 400.000 golfers and over 300 golf courses. Even though these numbers do not compare to some other areas, there are now 5 Dutch players on the European Tour, best known is probably Joost Luiten who was victorious twice in the KLM Open (2013 & 2016), the Dutch Open Championship that celebrated its 100th edition in 2019.

The light at the end of the tunnel: A look back at one of the toughest years in golf!

2020 has been a very tough year in the golfing industry, as we’ve seen the spread of Covid 19 growing wider worldwide with multiple shutdowns and lockdowns. A great amount of stress has been put on golf courses, events, and their staff but it has not all dark days as we’ve seen some of the golfing sectors flourish during the epidemic. Lockdown golfing
Being ‘lockdowned’ most people had more time hands for a few extra hobbies, from DIY activities to exercise regimes and of course more time for golf for the fortunate! We’ve seen an uptake in the game of golf with new players joining the game every day and golfclub memberships increasing, for the more experienced golfers out there, be patient and don’t lose your cool with all the new feet on your course, instead guide, help and advise where you can as we have all been there before, you never know your luck as one day you could be partnered with that player and he/she could carry you through to the International Pairs World Final! Welcome to the family
The International Pairs has also welcomed a few new licensees in the Year 2020 and has been in talks with potential new countries on signing up. We welcomed Northern Ireland, Iceland and Sweden and look forward to hosting the licensees and their players in the World Finals this year. New Ideas and concepts
Covid has caused and forced the golfing industry to adapt and try new things and has been the case when International Pairs launched the Hole 19 International Pairs Digital Challenge. The Digital Challenge gives golfers the opportunity to still play competitive golf without the fear of overcrowding and at the luxury of their own time. In Hole 19 International Pairs Digital Challenge golfers will also play as pairs of 2 in a betterball stableford format, golfers register online for a round, record their scores on the Hole 19 app and is then transferred onto their countries’ leaderboard. The Digital Challenge is currently available in the UK, Germany, Ireland, and Belgium. Any golfer with an official handicap index can sign up online and take part. The Hole 19 International Pairs Digital Challenge winners in each country will win an all-expenses paid trip to The International Pairs World Finals in Portugal to compete for the Digital Division Championship. Follow the link to find out more about the event: International Pairs in 2021 The International Pairs World Finals is still scheduled for 26 October to 30 October 2021 at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort in Algarve, Portugal, we look forward to seeing all the licensees and players for another extravagant event!
We wish all our fellow golfers a prosperous 2021, stay safe and happy golfing!

Windhoek Lager International Pairs Events are Live Once Again!

13 July 2020 Statement From GOLF RSA To All Unions and Clubs, Following the publication and distribution of the SA Government Advanced Level 3 Lockdown Regulations and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture’s Directions published on 6 July 2020 GolfRSA has updated and circulated its Risk Mitigation Guidelines and supporting guidelines. In terms of the GolfRSA Good Practice Guidelines (v12. Dated 6 July 2020),“Amateur competitions may be played, provided players do not have to travel across provincial borders, there are no spectators or prize- giving and all other Risk Mitigation requirements are in place”. Accordingly, in terms of competitive golf the following applies with immediate effect. Permitted Competitive Golf: 1.Competitions and events played under the auspices of the host facility: •Club Competitions:* open to members and visitors at the discretion of the host facility.* where club competitions are used as qualifying events for Regional and National Finals –clubs must be cognizant of the fact that restrictions on cross-provincial travel may result in the cancellation of such Finals.   As you all know golfers are eager to start playing competitions again. Based on the above you can now continue officially with your Windhoek Lager International Pairs qualifying events.   The lockdown has unfortunately caused the Windhoek Lager International Pairs qualifying events scheduled for your club scheduled between March and June, to be cancelled. Fortunately, we have some excellent news as we have extended the season (Season 5) to the end of December 2020. This gives you the opportunity to select new dates for your qualifying events. We have also decided in line with the golfers enthusiasm to play competition golf, not to limit the number of qualifying events a club can host for Season 5.   All you need to do is to email us the new dates for qualifying events between now and 31 December 2020 and we will amend it on our dairy. As soon as we have received the new dates from you we will contact you to make sure you get all you need to host the event/s. As always should you have any questions please feel free to contact us. +27 81 378 9817
